• Beowulf

• Tues. 10/15/19: FINAL TEST ON BEOWULF
• It will be an essay test (discussion of essay expectations)
• You will be allowed to use YOUR text of the epic poem (no notes, handouts, etc.)
• You will be given three topics and you will be required to write full essays on two of the three topics in the class period.
• Monday, 10/14/19 at 8 pm: I will have a live online study session (YouTube). I will Tweet the link and post it to the weblog / Google Classroom an hour beforehand. You will have the opportunity to send me questions via chat, Twitter, or email. The session will last about an hour. 

• In-Class Assignments: 
• "The Struggle Between Order and Chaos in Beowulf" by John Halverson. 
• I gave a grade on the article annotations from homework. If you were absent, let me see your article.
• Share summaries of the sections with your partner.
• On your copy of the article, make a list of oppositional elements presented in the article. Start with:

• Trace the significance of    (character/concept)     through the epic poem.
• Given a quote from a Beowulf scholar, agree or disagree using evidence from the text.
• Given a concept from the Halverson article, explain or defend/challenge it.
• Given a quote from the text of Beowulf, indicate who said it, the purpose, and the significance of the statement to the work as a whole.
• Given a new concept, evaluate the extent to which that concept is present in the epic poem.
• Given a subject like honor or trust, explain a theme that is learned about that subject through Beowulf.
